CBAA
I collaborated with CBAA (the Association for Book Art Education, but formerly the College Book Art Association) on their logo redesign. CBAA supports and promotes academic book arts education by fostering the development of its practice, teaching, scholarship and criticism. CBAA is a non-profit organization fundamentally committed to the teaching of book arts at the college and university level, while supporting such education at all levels, concerned with both the practice and the analysis of the medium. It welcomes as members everyone involved in such teaching and all others who have similar goals and interests. The association aims to engage in a continuing reappraisal of the nature and meaning of the teaching of book arts. The association shall from time to time engage in other charitable activities as determined by the Board of Directors to be appropriate.
Part of the challenge with the redesign was in retaining the acronym that is well recognized in the community while combining it with the new organization name, and doing so in a way that would function as a flexible identity system that references both the history of the craft as well as how it is being practiced in modern times.
The logo acronym was set in hand-printed (then digitized) Gothic Medium wood type in my studio; a nod to printing history and the handmade, but simultaneously referencing modernity due to the sans serif. Permeable letterforms combined with the multi-color shadow signify collaboration, connections, interdisciplinarity/intersectionality and diversity.
We then created versions of the logo to use across print and digital media as needed.
